Ever since Edison’s earliest discovery, horticultural experts have looked to artificial light to extend their growing season, broaden their range of indoor crops and maximise yields. Ensuring consistency of light and ambient temperature; both in terms of high-quality, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and photo-period are key to a grower’s success. Since the invention of GE’s Lucalox® High Pressure Sodium lighting in 1962, greenhouse operators have been able to supplement natural sunlight to deliver more predictable yields of high-quality produce that meets year-round consumer demand.

Lucalox® HPS lamps are available in 600W single-ended 230V and 400V options. The new lamps are rated with a lifetime of 14,000 hours to 90% survivals and a PAR maintenance of 90% at 14,000 hours, ensuring they
deliver consistently high light output and efficiency over a longer period

of time. This allows growers to use the lamps for longer, reducing maintanance and replacement costs as well as supporting sustainability over the long-term.

Today, growers need to consider more than the quality and reliability of production. With a greater sense of urgency surrounding climate change, tech- nologies like LED lighting are now being considered in order to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint, without compromising yield quality or volume. With the ability to tailor light recipes, LEDs also offer new opportunities to maximise the value of crops (e.g. more compact heads of lettuce or larger, fuller flowers).
